and Cyber Monday celebrate the biggest sales of the season. Those events are great opportunities to buy products for loved ones on your shopping lists. But isn’t that all part of the gift exchange? What about the spirit of the season that beckons us to give without expecting anything in return? Those questions address the heart of #GivingTuesday. This international event celebrates unadulterated, untether, heart-soothing altruism—and you can get involved.
#GivingTuesday is the brainchild of 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City. Since 1874, the organization has united its diverse community with creative initiatives that support those in need. This celebratory Tuesday began as a joint effort between 92nd Street Y and like-minded influencers. Now, it has become an entity of its own, impacting millions of lives worldwide.
#GivingTuesday takes place on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This year, the fourth annual event will be celebrated worldwide on December 1, 2015. Here’s how it works:
“#GivingTuesday harnesses the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities; it provides a platform for them to encourage the donation of time, resources and talents to address local challenges. It also brings together the collective power of a unique blend of partners— nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses and corporations, as well as families and individuals—to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness.”
In the past, we know that Yardi employees and clients have participated in #GivingTuesday. This year, we want participation to exponentially grow. Encourage others in your social circles to get involved.
When you volunteer, snap a picture. Post the image to Facebook or Twitter. Be sure to use the tags #GivingTuesday and @Yardi. Once submitted, you will be eligible for one of five prizes such as Starbucks gift cards and Yardi swag! These small tokens help to spread the word about an amazing, grassroots initiative that supports great causes around the world.
Want to increase your impact? Tag loved ones, too. That’s right. Call them out and tell them to step up!
