Helping residents receive COVID-19 vaccinations has become a critical task for senior living community operators. Fortunately, the Yardi EHR electronic health record system makes it easier to manage records associated with that effort. A recently added feature of Yardi EHR is an infection surveillance and immunization dashboard that allows health care staff to document that a resident has received, declined or missed appointments for COVID-19 vaccinations. A newly added assessment allows clients to record any side effects exhibited by vaccine recipients. The assessments incorporate Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for administering COVID-19 vaccines. The third element of the dashboard allows facilities to identify residents who present symptoms consistent with COVID-19. The Symptom Tracker assessment sends an alert to the dashboard when such symptoms are documented. For EHR systems, workplace training is essential. The software helps nurses deliver quality care, so it’s important that they become proficient in electronic charting and medication order management. Once they’ve learned the ropes, they get to spend more time with residents and less on technology. But when things change rapidly, as the case has been with COVID-19, it can be difficult to conduct enough hands-on training to bring staff up to speed, so it’s smart to provide extra learning resources to ensure they have the information they need, right when they need it. As a recent example, one senior living client of ours had the idea to create handouts for agency nurses who are supporting staff during the pandemic. Some of these new nurses were unfamiliar with Yardi EHR, so they were resorting to charting on paper. To get the nurses on track, the client created a two-page handout, featuring screenshots and instructions, that outlines what to do at the start, during and after a shift. Electronic health care records have been a staple of senior living for years now. They’re more efficient, fast and accurate than their paper-based counterparts, so it’s not hard to see why adoption has grown. But along with this push for progress has come a new challenge. It’s called interoperability, and it’s a technological hurdle that’s only become more pressing in recent months. Why senior living needs interoperability Hospitals have EHR systems they use, and senior living providers have their own. But neither group of solutions were built to talk to one another, so they can’t share health data electronically. Crucial data like medications, allergies, symptoms or even care plans. Instead, when a patient is discharged from a hospital to a senior living community, they’re often handed printed records in a binder. That information itself may be incomplete, so intake staff must then chase down the remaining details through phone, email or fax. This takes extra time and poses a risk for documentation errors that can hinder care. Every day, millions of Americans start their morning the same way: with a handful of prescription pills. In fact, nearly a third of all adults take five or more medications regularly. In senior living communities, the number is even higher with the average resident consuming a staggering 12-14 medications per day, thanks, in part, to a concept known as the prescribing cascade. This begins when a drug is prescribed, an adverse drug event (ADE) occurs, and the symptoms are misinterpreted as an entirely new medical condition, for which an additional medication is prescribed. With advancements in science and technology, doctors and their patients now have thousands of different drugs to choose from. The influx of medications available on the market has caused prescription drug use to explode, growing 85% over the last two decades. This trend is exacerbated by a massive number of aging baby boomers, many of whom will soon require care. How can caregivers in the senior living industry manage medications and mitigate risk in an increasingly drug-dependent world? One of the simplest strategies to implement is called the five rights: The Right Drug Prescription medications often have names that are easily mixed up. To minimize confusion between those that look or sound alike, the FDA reviews about 300 drug names a year before they hit the market—and about one-third of the names drug companies propose are rejected. For this reason, it’s critical to double or triple check the order with the label on the prescription packaging. The Right Route There are more than fifteen ways to administer medication, so never make assumptions. A pill, for instance, can be swallowed, crushed or held inside the cheek.
