A total of six senior living organizations were recognized by Argentum this year, including Benchmark Senior Living and Senior Lifestyle. Award winner: Benchmark Senior Living Need inspiration for your onboarding department? Look no further! Benchmark Senior Living earned a place on the Best of the Best list for their Virtual General Orientation program, a hybrid learning model in which in-person instruction supplements online sessions. The program is offered weekly for new hires across the company. According to Benchmark, a key benefit of the program is time savings. To accommodate new hires before, staff members often spent hours planning and delivering live programming, which took time away from other pressing initiatives. With the new-and-improved blend of virtual and in-person onboarding, Benchmark now saves over 500 hours of staff labor each week. The program also helps Benchmark ensure their onboarding content is consistent across time and location, and gives new hires the opportunity to engage with staff from other communities in a virtual setting. Staffing Crisis Shifts...

Employee turnover and attracting caregiving staff (traditionally cited as the top challenges among senior living operators) are now being reported as the second and third biggest challenges senior living organizations are confronted with. That finding comes from the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care (NIC) via their recent survey. Described as a “positive sign of relief” for senior living operators, the data suggests the industry is slowly turning the corner in regard to staffing challenges. The survey — Executive Survey Insights: Wave 44 — in addition to NIC’s latest survey (Wave 45), are packed with more discoveries on the state of senior living. Keep reading for a highlight: About NIC Executive Survey Insights What are NIC Executive Survey Insights? Introduced back in 2020, the initiative seeks to deliver real-time insights on the pandemic’s impact in senior living. By distributing surveys to operators across the U.S., NIC gauges what obstacles communities are facing and measures their pace of recovery. This Wave 44 survey includes responses from July 25 to August 21 of this year, drawn from owners and executives of 55 small, medium and large senior housing and skilled nursing operators across the nation. As for Wave 45, responses are from August 22 to September 18, pulled from 47 operators. Wave 44 & 45 findings While the Wave 44 report reveals several important findings, this stands out most: staffing challenges are no longer being cited as the number one concern for industry operators. Instead, the report shows rising operator expenses as the top challenge organizations are currently facing (according to 86% of survey respondents). So in regard to the staffing crisis, the Wave 44 data shows promise. And building off that positivity, three-quarters of respondents say they’re optimistic that more improvements are on...

New Integration

For senior care staff, taking resident vitals is often done manually. From capturing vital signs to recording data for each resident, the process is time consuming and heightens the risk for transcription errors. Luckily for providers and care staff, technology exists to capture, protect and connect that data. That describes our new partnership with Direct Supply, an integration between our electronic health record solution, Yardi EHR, and their DS smart technology. At a glance, the integration enables data drawn from supported equipment — like vital signs monitors — to flow into Yardi EHR. It’s an exciting step forward for us and our senior living clients. But how does this integration simplify care workflows? Reduce errors? Improve the resident experience? We have the answers. There’s a lot to cover, but that’s what we’re here for! See below for a breakdown of how the integration works — and how it benefits communities.   About Direct Supply First things first, who is Direct Supply? Founded in 1985, this employee-owned company specializes in providing equipment and services to healthcare organizations, skilled nursing and assisted living communities throughout the United States. Their technology comes in different forms, but for our purposes, we’re introducing their DS smart solution. This intuitive platform gathers resident vitals taken from varying devices — from monitors to scales — in real time. This ensures resident vitals are captured quickly and efficiently, leaving no room for errors.   Our new integration For Yardi EHR clients, a typical staff workflow with this integration involves:  Connecting a mobile device to vitals equipment via BluetoothTaking a resident’s vitalsReviewing measured vitals on the DS smart appApproving a real-time upload to Yardi EHR   So once a resident’s vitals are taken using DS smart technology, that data flows seamlessly into Yardi EHR. As...

Presented by Senior Housing News (SHN) and sponsored by Yardi for the fourth consecutive year, the series interviews industry visionaries to capture their experiences, strategies and advice. And to earn the Changemaker title, leaders need to push boundaries and take innovative approaches in senior living. The 2022 honorees certainly do — including our final Changemaker: Dale Watchowski. As the president and CEO of American House, one of our senior living clients, Dale shares insights about his leadership journey to date — plus more. Keep reading for a quick highlight of his interview. Meet Dale Watchowski When you meet someone with 30 years of industry experience, you know they have a few strategies up their sleeve. For Dale Watchowski, three decades in real estate and senior living have taught him valuable lessons, sparking his ability to drive strategic change. At American House, he brings that strategy — and unique leadership skills — to help the organization stand out from the crowd. That’s the basis of his interview with SHN, but there’s more to uncover. View the snapshot below then ready Dale Watchowski’s full interview. SHN: How have you changed as a leader since you’ve joined American House? Watchowski: I’ve always seen myself as an investor in real estate, as REDICO is the parent company of American House. REDICO is an acronym for Real Estate Development Investment Company, and throughout my career I’ve been investing in real estate and operating real estate. But the business of senior housing requires much more than that. Of course, you need financial discipline and some institutional character, but the business of serving and caring for seniors has to be top of mind and for me, it’s always felt philanthropic....

Benefits of Integrated Software

The last two-plus years have changed the senior living industry, presenting unforeseen challenges for providers. Mainly, they’re tasked with finding effective systems and strategies to meet the needs of residents, families and staff as the industry navigates a new normal. So which solutions are important, now more than ever? For providers and other healthcare leaders, implementing a software solution may have the greatest impact. According to research like this piece from Ziegler, the pandemic has accelerated the adoption of tech-enabled solutions across the healthcare industry like never before. Implementing the right software solution is key in streamlining operations, increasing resident satisfaction, delivering quality care and the list goes on. But not just any software solution is beneficial. To meet the needs of their communities, providers need a full suite of integrated tools that are mobile, intuitive and efficient. Benefits of integrated software When selecting senior living software, it’s important to know the difference between disparate and integrated systems. With disparate tools, you’re operating communities from several platforms that don’t necessarily speak to each other. That leads to time wasted navigating multiple systems, challenges in bringing staff up to speed, the risk of pulling inaccurate data and more. Ziegler’s white paper notes the importance of choosing a single connected solution to stay ahead of the curve. With an integrated system, every facet of your business is united in one place. That offers ease of use for staff, reduced costs and time savings — all leading to streamlined operations and enhanced care. That’s where the Yardi Senior Living Suite comes in. As an integrated system that eliminates the gap between senior living property management and clinical services, the Senior Living Suite gives providers everything they need to manage their communities. The key differentiator? The union of property management, finance, marketing, business intelligence and resident care on a single platform. At a glance, here are five ways the Yardi Senior Living Suite sets your communities apart: Combine property management, finance and business oversight for improved efficiency, reduced costs and responsive resident services with a comprehensive management tool, Yardi Voyager Senior HousingKeep residents and families connected through a secure online portal, RentCafe Senior LivingMake smarter, faster decisions with actionable information for your entire portfolio through Yardi Senior IQ, a business intelligence solution for senior livingKeep health records error free, limit liability and empower staff to deliver the best resident care with Yardi EHR, a full-service electronic health record solution  Attract new residents, nurture your leads and increase resident retention with RentCafe Senior CRM, a mobile-friendly sales and marketing solution Learn more about Yardi software for senior living There’s no denying the importance of software solutions for businesses — especially those that provide interconnected tools. Preparing For Aging  ...

Planning for the future isn’t always easy, especially for seniors considering how they’ll navigate life as they age. Interestingly, most older adults recognize that they’ll need some form of assistance in the future — but less have concrete plans for how to get there.  That’s the focus of a recent study conducted by AARP, which surveyed 1,011 U.S. adults aged 50 and older. The goal was to gauge older adults’ attitudes related to long-term care planning. Curious about the findings? See below for a snapshot: Senior living study: Preparing for aging   According to the study — Long-Term Care Readiness — 68% of older adults believe they’ll need assistance with their daily activities in the future, but only 28% have thoroughly considered what life will look like when that assistance is needed.   In short, older adults may not be preparing for their aging journey as much as they could be. Relayed by McKnight’s Senior Living, the AARP study also revealed the following:    74% of those aged 65 and older believe they’ll need future assistance, compared to 64% of respondents aged 50 to 65Those aged 65 and older gave more thought to how they’ll live independently as they age, compared to respondents aged 50 to 65Not being able to live independently (63%) and becoming a burden to family members (62%) were the top two concerns noted by all respondentsFewer respondents were concerned about savings (59%), living in assisted living or nursing homes (58%) or not being able to age at home AARP sought to understand the effect of COVID-19 too, assessing whether older adults plan for the future more than they did two years ago. Read the study to learn what respondents said, and uncover additional findings. More research This isn’t the first...

Fortunately for providers facing these challenges, implementing technology solutions can ease the burden — and lead their communities toward a brighter future. Here at Yardi, we strive to help providers navigate obstacles with our senior living management software. This includes MBK Senior Living, who recently reached their 10-year anniversary as a Yardi client. From our team to MBK’s, it’s an honor to celebrate this special milestone! About MBK MBK Senior Living follows a people-first approach in senior living. Putting residents’ health and happiness first — emphasizing exceptional care, nutritious dining and the highest level of respect — is what makes their communities shine. Founded in 1990, MBK offers options in assisted living, independent living and memory care. And 30 years of service has led the organization to continuously evolve and innovate, ensuring residents receive the best possible care. Today, MBK owns and operates communities in California, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Colorado and Arizona. Navigating industry challenges Like other providers, MBK has worked to strategically navigate the staffing crisis. With help from Yardi software solutions and decades of experience steering their communities forward, they’ve found creative ways to attract and retain staff. Highlighted in a Senior Housing News article this year, MBK’s staffing approach includes an executive director training program, which has led to the promotion of several internal candidates across their communities. In turn, vital team members have stayed on board throughout the staffing crisis. In addition to promoting internal candidates, MBK has also recruited new, qualified staff by treating candidates the same way they approach prospective residents: with respect and kindness. As a result, the staffing crisis hasn’t impacted MBK’s inquiries, tours and move-ins. Instead, the Irvine, California-based organization continues to...

McCaleb: Our company has always made a difference through creating. The term “Resident first” may be a cliché in our industry, but it is not a cliché at Sagora, where we have a motto “Resident First, Team focused and Quality centered.” We’ve worked hard over the last six years to create a team member-first environment. Nelson: I’ve had the good fortune to be in the industry for the last 36 years, and there have been many changes in LCS and the senior living industry during that time. The one I’m most proud of is when I was given the opportunity to start our real estate company back in 2010. It was transformational for the company and who we are, and it has driven even more changes as a result. There’s a lot to be proud of in this industry, which is why I stuck around for so long. I’ve been on multiple association boards, and for the last couple...

Changemakers Series

Now in its fourth consecutive year, the Changemakers series showcases forward-thinking leadership in senior living. But not just any leaders earn the honor. The Changemakers title is reserved for those who drive positive change across the industry — and who pursue innovative strategies along the way.  It’s empowering to see how each honoree is transforming the industry as we know it. That’s made possible through in-depth interviews conducted by Senior Housing News (SHN) and sponsored by Yardi. And lucky for you, the first batch of interviews is live. That includes one from Tana Gall, president of Merrill Gardens, a family-owned company and Yardi client. Her story is one you don’t want to miss. Meet Tana Gall From decades of experience in senior living, Changemaker Tana Gall is skilled at problem solving. That comes from her initiative to take risks and forge new paths, which Gall has done throughout her career. Now as president of Merrill Gardens, she has an important perspective on what it takes to spearhead change. In her interview, Gall tells SHN about her bold but calculated risk-taking approach, plus she shares lessons learned from her 27 years in the industry. Keep reading for a highlight.   SHN: Thinking back on your career in senior living, what are some of the changes you’re especially proud of leading? Gall: In the early 2000s, I was able to work with a group on changing our industry messaging. For my first few years in the industry, a lot of the same words were used to describe what we did — respect, integrity, independence. They were generic and didn’t capture what the industry represented, so we took a leap. During my time at Leisure Care, I worked with a very creative group of people to roll...

Changemakers Series

Remember Changemakers — the annual series recognizing pioneers in senior living? It’s a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the innovation, drive and commitment circling the industry, and honor the leaders behind it all. We’re pleased to announce the 2022 series has officially begun. Proudly sponsored by Yardi for the fourth year in a row, the Senior Housing News (SHN) Changemakers series will showcase some of the most dynamic leadership senior living has to offer. Released in batches over the next several months, this year’s interviews will feature never-before-seen insights from visionaries across the industry. In that spirit, meet our first Changemaker: Tom Grape. About Tom Grape As founder, chairman and CEO of Benchmark Senior Living, a dedicated Yardi client, Grape is well versed in spearheading change. Having founded the company in 1997, he embodies what it means to shape senior living as we know it. In his interview with SHN, Grape details how he’s led Benchmark through change to attract a more complex consumer, his mission to increase diversity at the leadership level and more. Here’s a snapshot: SHN: What changes have you driven at Benchmark or in the industry that you’re especially proud of? Grape: I’ve been in the industry for a long time, and I’m proud of having been, at least in the assisted living side, there from the ground up. I was one of the founding members of, then ALFA, now Argentum, and was a chair many years ago. I founded the Massachusetts chapter, helping write legislation in Massachusetts and as a founder of the Connecticut chapter, I take pride in being one of the early folks. Benchmark was an early champion of promoting positive culture, and we are still defined by that characteristic today. The Boston Globe has named us in their “Top Places to Work” list each of the 14 years they’ve had it. We’re the only company to accomplish that in their large company category, and I’m so proud of that. We’re continuing to be a strong proponent of culture. Care, in general, is something on which we’ve worked hard to differentiate ourselves from others. And we’ve become a pioneer in capital over time. We were the first one to bring opportunity fund capital and international capital to the sector, and we were one of the first RIDEA deals. SHN: How do you think about timing so that a company like Benchmark can innovate without getting so far ahead that a new idea is just too new? Grape: The best way to drive change is to do it in increments. We’ll start with a pilot, depending on what kind of change it is, to test it, tinker with it and work out some of the kinks. If it’s not being well-received but you think the execution is OK, then maybe you’re doing it too soon. I would try to avoid too many broad-scale changes at once without having done some form of test or early introduction. SHN: If you could change one thing about the senior living industry, what would it be? Grape: I’d love the senior living industry to find a way to have our product/service received in a more universally positive fashion. Our product is a real gift to the people we serve and yet, it is not always received as such. It’s not always delivered as such. If we can have it delivered, received and portrayed more consistently it would be a great advance for the industry.
