YASC 2018
Change is incremental – and good
Washington, D.C. (May 30, 2018) – Kicking off Yardi’s Advanced Solutions Conference (YASC) at the Washington Hilton, Yardi president and founder Anant Yardi shared his perspective on change. “For me, change is incremental. It’s not disruptive. Change is something we have to count on. If you are successful in making small steps over the course of time, you will be successful,” Mr. Yardi stated before more than 2,000 Yardi clients and employees gathered for the East Coast education and networking event. A West Coast YASC will be held in San Diego in September. In a 45-minute talk reflecting on the company’s development history and looking toward the future, the focus was on new lines of product development that Yardi has underway to help its clients meet their real estate and investment goals. The technology company’s goal is to help clients increase revenues and asset values while reducing costs and risk. Energy solutions, coworking management, and a full asset management suite were presented as ways to help achieve those goals. Mr. Yardi offered attendees a sneak preview of the Yardi Elevate Suite, an operational performance solution that includes in-depth operations data, deal management, market insight, predictive insights, budgeting, business intelligence and revenue forecasting. The product builds on the proven Deal Manager solution and will incorporate additional new tools, including Forecast Manager, Construction Manager, Retail Manager and Facility Manager. Another area of focus was Yardi’s growing commitment to coworking, including the leasing of vacant space for shared and temporary workers. The company has made two recent acquisitions in the area, including Wun Systems and most recently Phoenix Broadband, a Scottish company that created a platform for managing technology resources in a shared workspace. “It seems to us that this is a new category of asset type....

Sustainable Training
Yardi eLearning
Do you find that your internal staff training program lacks engagement or consistency? Yardi eLearning’s featured topic for this month focuses on creating effective and sustainable training programs for busy real estate companies. Take the pressure off of your training team with these best practices. The Balance Sheet caught up with Michael Joiner of Yardi eLearning’s client services team to get the inside scoop on what this valuable training platform has to offer. What does it mean to have an Effective and Sustainable Training Program? Joiner: An effective training program is one that meets the training needs of a company. A sustainable training program requires a balance between the administrative tasks—like scheduling training, assigning courses, communicating between instructors and students, validating student work, running reports—and maintaining existing training with the development of new training that meets additional needs of the company and its employees. What’s one common hurdle that keeps clients’ training programs from being effective? Joiner: Not identifying the needs of the learners. For instance, you can assign a ton a courses, but do those courses help bridge a skills gap or correct a behavior? Ineffective training programs assign courses for the sake of assigning content that someone thinks is necessary, but it may not be relevant or applicable to an individual. What’s one common hurdle that keeps clients’ training programs from being sustainable? Joiner: Focusing too much on developing new training and letting existing training become out dated. Out-of-date training leads to a lack of engagement and trust on the part of the learner. A sustainable training program creates new training initiatives while regularly updating existing content. How can users access this information after the webinar? Joiner: We’re teaching this class at YASC Washington, D.C. May 30- June 1, 2018. We’ll also be...
Connections at YASC
Fort Smith Housing Authority
The next Yardi Advanced Solutions Conference is coming to Washington, D.C., kicking off on May 30, 2018. YASC brings together more than 1,500 professionals from nearly every property and financial management industry for instruction, comradery, and insight into the future of technology. At last year’s YASC, we sat down with Rachel Brown, Section 8 manager for the Fort Smith, Arkansas Housing Authority (FSHA). Rachel has witnessed exciting growth during her nearly 15 years with FSHA, growth that includes personal experiences, organizational development, as well as the growth of clients she serves. Here’s a recap of our conversation last spring. Welcome to YASC! Tell us a little about yourself and your organization. Our mission is to develop, rehabilitate and manage decent, safe and sanitary affordable housing. We promote equal opportunity, fair housing initiatives and the deconcentration of race and poverty. I’ve been with FSHA for nearly 15 years, and we’ve really grown over that time. When I first started as a housing specialist, we had around 450 Public Housing units and less than 1,200 vouchers. Today, we have more than 1,600 vouchers under our management, transitioned 288 public housing units through the RAD program, and replaced 170 public housing units with the help of Low-Income Housing Tax Credits. Our current development efforts include Low-Income Housing Tax Credit units, rehabbing dilapidated housing for sale to low- and moderate-income families, and exploring ways to provide everyone with the affordable housing that meets their needs. What do you find most rewarding about your career thus far? Seeing people’s lives transition and change for the better, those are the real ‘wow’ moments. Clients come into our program in many personal situations. Some are single parents, others are going to school or raising a family. It’s inspiring when they enter our...

YASC DC 2016
A look inside the event
Ever wondered why Yardi clients flock to the company’s two major user conferences each year? There are the obvious reasons, like the specialized courses on product features, the chance to network with other clients, and who doesn’t like to get out of the office for a few days? But a closer look at today’s YASC event in Washington DC demonstrates the true value this conference provides. Three sample sessions We started our morning with the Orion BI Experience: A User Perspective panel. Three clients, each representing a different real estate vertical, talked to a packed room about the exceptional functionality that Orion BI has brought to their businesses. While each client introduced Orion BI for different reasons, the results they have experienced were very similar: enhanced visibility into their own data, insight on key performance indicators, happier top-level executives and reduced time preparing for regular reporting meetings. Lisa Kolb, consultant/senior systems analyst for A.J. Dwoskin, said that her mixed portfolio client adopted Orion has part of a transition to a paperless office, but soon realized many additional benefits, including the fact that it greatly reduced “analysis paralysis.” Reports were created based on the KPI’s that the company truly wanted to hone in on. “It became part of our initiative to focus on KPI’s, and the drill down capabilities helped us focus on what really mattered,” Kolb said. Norma Soria, Management Systems Director for the Cesar Chavez Foundation, a California affordable housing provider, spoke enthusiastically about the time her team saved as a result of implementing Orion. “We have a weekly meeting with regional managers, and it had typically been four hours long. With Orion BI, it went down to two, and the time to prepare for it was also cut in half,” Soria said. ** Next up, we headed to a client round table called Developing Your Workforce: Creating a Culture of Learning, led by Yardi’s Manager of eLearning, Patty Evans. Training is a very hot topic with Yardi users and property management executives. Nearly 40 people joined the session to learn what best practices Patty had to share. Separated into small groups, clients had the chance to share their training challenges, which included dealing with employee turnover, how to motivate employees who aren’t interested in advancing their careers, ways to incorporate training into busy schedules, and how to take advantage of cutting edge digital training options. Motivating employees to train might take many different forms, Evans pointed out. Some may want to do it to advance their careers or earn a raise, others may need a more mandatory approach. But allowing staff to have some choices in their training programming can be empowering, she explained, especially for younger employees. “This is a new generation, a new learner. We need to trust how they problem solve,” Evans said. Clients closed out the session by brainstorming some ways to address training challenges and sharing their ideas with each other. Many were attending all of the classes in the Yardi eLearning programming track, a popular offering this spring. ** Next it was time for another client panel, this one focused on implementing Yardi Voyager 7S. Four clients, representing multifamily market rate housing, affordable housing, office and mixed-use, shared their thoughts. One of the major transitions made by many Yardi clients moving to Voyager 7S has been the switch to being hosted by Yardi rather than self-hosted. Heather Ferlin of Investco talked about that change. “Really, the biggest difference we have experienced was that now we have many less technical issues than when we were self-hosted,” Ferlin said, adding that her phone rings far less often now with complaints about server issues. “Our company is growing. We are building more units, and getting more (Yardi) users. We didn’t have the capacity to stay self-hosted.” Jeffrey Callan, CIO of major multifamily firm Morgan Properties, was another panel participant. He stressed the importance of...

General session recap
In a speech focused on goals and giving back, Yardi CEO and founder Anant Yardi addressed the 1300 attendees of the 2016 Spring Yardi Advanced Solutions Conference in Washington, DC on Wednesday morning. Speaking to the clients across a variety of real estate verticals, Mr. Yardi talked about the company’s focus for the future: app-based technology that will enhance ease of use and push real estate software toward a model similar to Uber and Airbnb. “Our focus from here onwards will be mobile apps,” Mr. Yardi said. He demonstrated how apps already play a significant role for Yardi multifamily clients. Renters using the RentCafe Resident app have submitted thousands of work orders, which are processed using Yardi Maintenance mobile apps for property and maintenance managers. Additional apps for leasing, facilities management, and electronic health care record-keeping are already in use by Yardi clients. Mr. Yardi forecast that in the near future, apps will allow users to quickly and easily interface with their cloud-based Voyager platforms. 95 percent of Yardi clients are now cloud-hosted, he said. “That’s one of our goals – just one segment of our next pentathlon,” Mr. Yardi said. The general session opened with a video showcasing the marketing genius of pentathlete Mia Wentworth, Director of Marketing and Training at Monarch Investment and Management. Her focus on creating a “culture of achievement” at her company inspired Yardi’s remarks on bringing value to clients and breaking new ground. For the first time, Mr. Yardi also publicly acknowledged the company’s efforts to give back to the communities where the company has offices via corporate philanthropy and service. “In the past, we haven’t talked about it,” he said. “The thought was that if you talk about your giving, somehow it diminishes the essence of what...

New frontier of mobile technology
Today marks the kickoff of Yardi’s semiannual Advanced Solutions Conference (YASC) in Washington, D.C. Over 1,200 clients have gathered at the Washington Hilton for three days of intensive classes and labs facilitated by Yardi’s software experts. This morning, founder and president Anant Yardi issued the welcoming address. After more than 30 years in business, Mr. Yardi acknowledged that there are a few things that have not and will not change: Yardi’s focus on customer satisfaction, innovation, integrity, respect, open communication and an atmosphere of camaraderie remain at the heart of company operations. With those strong values as a foundation, Yardi approaches the coming years with a series of new products and mobile advancements. A few highlights include: HOUSINGCafé, a new tool for the affordable housing community that assists clients and housing professionals from start to finish. The software serves as an affordable real estate ILS, connecting potential tenants to available listings with ease. Housing providers can advertise properties and then direct interested parties to apply online. Housing providers also gain access to a customizable system that configures to the unique needs of various levels of compliance. For tenants, the software serves as a step-by-step guide for submitting housing applications and supporting documentation online. As a result of HOUSINGCafé, both clients and housing providers receive the gift of time: fewer meetings, fewer trips to the bank and post office, and much more. Concord, which collaborated with Yardi on the software’s development, recorded a 50% drop in the time required to complete an income certification. Mobile technology innovation continues to be a major focus for the company. Tablet usage in corporate America is expected to grow 48% in coming years. To meet the demand, Yardi is introducing a line of products that is compatible with tablets and other mobile devices. Voyager, Yardi’s premiere web-based enterprise management system, has gone mobile. Voyager 7S brings the fully integrated real estate software to the complete spectrum of mobile devices worldwide. Clients can operate Voyager 7S on any mobile device with any browser, anywhere. Mobile access to Yardi Leasing Pad and Yardi PopCard via Voyager will continue as well, giving leasing professionals full access to property and tenant information on the go. Maintenance technicians will soon have access to the Mobile Maintenance Manager, an expanded mobile solution for accessing, scheduling and logging maintenance requests. This new tool helps property managers fill tenants needs more efficiently, facilitating a property that is responsive and proactive. Additional new product improvements include updates to RentCafé and Yardi Orion for SharePoint. RENTCafé, Yardi’s web-based leasing marketing solution, has enhanced its offerings to include reputation management capabilities in addition to social media management. Facebook pages can now include lists of property amenities and floor plans in addition to ILS syndication tools, and tenant portals for online rent payments and service request. As the go-to source for business intelligence and collaboration, Yardi Orion for SharePoint now furnishes users with enhanced reporting tools that make accessing, sharing, and reporting management data easier than ever. These product developments come in response to the dynamic housing industry and feedback from Yardi clients across the globe. Yardi strives to create products that meet the changing needs of clients. Mr. Yardi quoted Thomas Edison: “Anything that won’t sell, I don’t want to invent,” noting the innovative technology must be useful to be successful. By equipping clients with practical, helpful resources, Yardi positions clients with the tools needed to be industry leaders, offering software products that promote objective assessment for effective decision marking and goal setting. Additionally, the products allow company leadership and stakeholders to share information, creating a united vision for the future. Moving forward, Yardi has committed to staying abreast of the latest technology trends while paving the way for the future with insightful innovations. Our team in Washington looks forward to sharing more details about those innovations with you today and over the next two...
