Renter survey results presented at CAIC help Canadian property managers improve services and rental revenue
SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Oct, 12, 2017 —Results of the Tenants Preference Survey were presented at the Canadian Apartment Investment Conference (CAIC) in September. Each year, the CAIC brings together property owners, managers, investors and developers to provide valuable insights into the residential market including how to increase net values. Yardi sponsored this year’s Tenants Preference Survey and the closing roundtable at CAIC.
The survey, the only of its kind for the Canadian market, was conducted online by Informa and yielded responses from over 7,000 renters eager to share their likes, dislikes and must-haves with property managers and landlords. Survey data was presented by Amy Erixon, principal and managing director of investments at Avison Young at CAIC to showcase the most compelling trends.
Sarah Segal, director at Informa, commented, “Yardi was immediately onboard with helping us produce this in-depth renter survey and perceived its value to the apartment industry. We were also pleasantly surprised by how many property managers wanted to be involved this year — proving that what renters want is important.”
A few highlights from the survey include: 66% of renters visit property websites and read reviews; of those that have one, 31% use community website portals and another 47% of those that do not have one would like one; 47% prefer online debit payments; 34% won’t rent without high-speed internet and 52% wish to communicate with their property managers via email. Segal also remarked that the responses to the open-ended survey questions, including, “What could your landlord do to keep you?” provided additional details about what renters expect from their apartment living experience.
Peter Altobelli, vice president and general manager of Yardi Canada, said, “Yardi is very pleased that our successful relationship with Informa is resulting in this industry-changing initiative that provides value to our industry.”
